RYAN MCGUINESS:WORKS
Peeped Ryan McGuiness’ show entitled work last weekend. It was a cluster-fuck of people like most Deitch stuff these days. Nice space saw a lot of familiar faces and checked out Ryan’s new work. He’s another fine artist that blurs the line between graphic design and fine art. He uses a bunch of stencils and an elaborate color pallet including a lot of neon/fluorescent colors. He also showed some glass sculptures which I dug and some spin art like pieces that I’m still not sure about. They kind of reminded me off something I would have seen in a head shop circa 1978 on 8th street but that’s why art is so great…….it’s totally subjective and from the looks of things people dug it all (All those red dots that mean sold confirmed this!)
The highlight of the show for me was the black canvas’ and these sculptures:
The Spin art in question: Didn’t dig spin art when Damion Hirst pimped. Still don’t dig it. It seems like a inside joke that got outside or something but like I said these debates are what makes art so tremendous
I saw my pal Boogie and his lovely wife Nami there….Boogies awsome
Saw these guys here as well Bill McMullen and Scott Campbell two of my favorites. Bill just had a great shw in LA and Scotts about to have on in Miami with my people at OHWEE it should be sick!
Ok my thoughts on the show:
I tend not to dig artists that mass produce there work like a product on a assembly line ala Jeff Koons or Marc Kostabi and something about Ryans work here makes me feel like it may be mass produced to an extent. I could be wrong but it had a conveyor built feeling to it at times.
That said I dug the sculptures and the black canvas’ as I have never seen him use negative space like that before. My feeling on the show are 100 pct subjective and off base to some. I am just voicing what I saw and felt. Ryan Mcguinness is one of those artist that continues to blur the lines/boundaries between graphic design/product design and fine art which on it’s own is a worthy enough discussion worthy enough to validate any one’s work in fact. That grey area is one of the most intriguing things about the state of downtown art these days to me but me I’m a dork and I find this terrain and debate kind of exciting.
Regardless the entire show sold out so it just goes to show you the subjectivity’s of art……Its a great thing ya know?
Enjoy
