TRAVIS LOUIE:STRANGE NEIGHBORS @ FUSE GALLERY

Uncategorized December 1st, 2008

Popped in to Fuse Gallery and peeped out Travis Louies show over the weekend. Travis is a serious talent with a totally unique and child like style that incorporates lots of scary yet playful imagery. His work is some where in the realm of Edward Gorey or Maurice Sendak in a sense. Eric Foss who runs Fuse introduced me to Travis’ work a few years ago and I’ve been a fan ever since. He’s a NYC original and a nice guy. His work is really cool to me check it out:

I dig his whole aesthetic. He has a adjoining story with each character to guide you along. This group of paintings was inspired by trips to his grand parents home on Mulberry street as a kid. All of the characters depicted in this show are based on the tenants in this building and were invented by Travis many moons ago. I dig his rhetoric it’s really engaging and I dig the fact he created this entire netherworld of characters.

One eye seems to be a popular motif with Mr. Louie

This is Travis a totally cool, bugged out blue collar artist from Queens New York….Cat’s star is on the rise glad I copped a piece last year. His style is unique, fun, and very child like. I dig mucho go peep the show at Fuse Gallery @93 2nd ave New York City tell em I sent ya!
