One of the greatest African singers of all time passed last week. Miriam Makeba was a freedom fighter of the highest order. She was exiled from her country South Africa in 1963 for her vocal anti-aparthied beliefs. She was married to activist Stokely Carmichael and later the South African musician Hugh Masekela. She was a close personal friend of Nelson Mandelas singing at his release celebration in London in 1990. She also made some amazing and beautiful music in her 35 year long career. Miriam Makeba was a heroine in her native South Africa and suffered for her beliefs and principals. She had a long triumphant career and stood up to oppression and in justice in a time when it could cost you your life. Thats some serious stuff right there something some how I don’t think emo kids will ever have to go through.
