Art Weekend NYC

Uncategorized December 4th, 2007

So many shows the past weekend in NYC .  Went to a bunch of stuff let me give you the breakdown!

New Museum preview:

It was kind of sterile. It made it clear to me why I dig LowBrow outsider art so much. There was a no pic rule but I squeezed off a few. Sorry people I didnt get titles and in all truth I was underwhelmed and dodging security. Here’s a few flicks of what I dug. My litany of dissapointments begins with the unengaging enviorment, the sterile almost intimidating vibe inside the space and the over bearing sense of pretense. Enough gripes here’s some pics of what I did like!

Here’s another piece I found interesting

And another piece I thought was kind of cool. 7 floors of art , 5 with instalations and this is what the choose to show the world….Can I get a curators job at the museum please? Trust me I know how to engage the youth with art!

Now here’s the stuff that make New York great…. I hustled over to the WK show in Brooklyn at the Espeis gallery and rememberd why I dig what I dig!

WK’s show showed growth ins scope, presentation and mediums…. I was impressed

I really dug his skateboards….they were functional as he took one of the wall and let me tool around on it for a sec…..should have got that pic dam

I loved this piece it was sick! Muhamed Ali in case you didnt know

Peep whats behind the door ….

I could show you WK stuff all day long….his show was really inspired. I dug the show a ton and I want that Ali piece man the things amazing! Saw my bro Haze there caught a shot of these 2 icons!

Next day I went to Johnathon Levine and checked out the this show it was dope man…..

I dug this show alot …..Bo anfd Micro Bo are sick I really dug there stuff at wooster on spring last year……here’s some of there work

More Bo

I really dug Micro Bo as well ….Shes a small lady from italy  and shes amazing!

More Micro Bo

Ok now I dig Dface but I’m not sure if I cosign the usage of so many images I have seen before. i thought his work at Wooster on spring was amazing……I dig a few of these pieces but I dont dig the repetition of styles and images…. I wanted to see new stuff by him….

Here’s one I really dug…. I’m curious though there are times when he and Banksy are very similar….I know there comtemporarys but sometimes I think theres a little too much image/swagger jacking in street art

One more this is a funny piece

A little sculpture for you courtesy of DFace

Moving on I loved Space Invader…. irreverent, playful and I haven’t seen his work too much so I was into it……New Inspiration is always nice

And another…. Sid Vicious get’s the Space Invader treatment

This one was really fun as well…

And then there was Blek Le Rat… I always wondered about his similaritys between Banksy and Blek le Rat’s work as well. I wonder who came up with the rat motif first……once again alot of swagger/image jacking going on….Do street artists ever have beef like Graf writers?

Le blek Rat

Le Blek again

Last but no way least was Blu….Was’t so familiar with the work but I loved it!. Original, funny and childlike…..a breath of fresh air!

Ok now a pause from our sponsor….Some street art for real! Judith Supine and Gaia collab……

Swoon Brooklyn adjacent the WK show

Ok now back to the main show……There was also a Banksy show of sorts….. The show was a private collection of Banksy work and was not sold and presented by Banksy and Dr. Lazarie his mysterious art dealer/ co-conspiritor of sorts……..The show was dissapointing as I feel part of Banksy’s impact is in his presentation and scale. this was a hodge podgey assortment of decent pieces but without Banksy presenting his work in his own unique and grandiose way like his LA show last year it just doesn’t feel special to me

Here’s some of the work

Here’s a few of the pieces:

Ok I was a bit underwhelmed. I went to the LA show, I have seen his work on the streets of London and LA and his presentation is so imortant. I wonder did he ordain this show? Anyway they had shirts for sale they were 50 bucks a piece ….. weird thing is they had them out in the middle of the floor so me being the former delinquient I am I promptly racked 2 of them….It was in the true spirt of Banksy… I heard I started a trend of sorts… Ask Haze and Mare about this rumor

Thanks my thoughts exactly….Ok this cat here fakes no funk… Ron English perhaps the finest painter in the LowBrow game this side of Robert Williams. Me being the bonehead I am left my camera at home so I took these off the Opera Gallerys site….Great show Ron English is always ahead of the curve, will never be confused with a graphic designer and his political commentary is always super on point…….Peep game

Ron English the guy is just amazing go see the show the images dont even do it justice I swear……… Ron English wont be confused with Banksy, Blek Le Ratt or anybody else he is 100 pct original…..Thanks for the work Ron your amazing!

Now some good old fashioned Street art and Graf for yall!
